Parametric design can be a difficult concept to precisely define, however, in its most basic essence it is a form of design which is computer aided or digitally generated.
Using what is referred to as “design intent,” parametric design generates algorithms to calculate project changes or formulas that can be used in a wide variety of mediums from architecture to jewelry design.
Any design project that is dependent of replication and repetition such as data mapping, structures, floor plans, urban plans and elevations can benefit from the use of parametric design.
Software such as Grasshopper allows designers to explore new shapes and patterns using generative algorithms. Grasshopper does not require knowledge of scripting or programming but will still allow engineers or designers to edit projects in a less labor intensive and quicker way.
Designs can be adjusted but manipulating geometry, for example tangency or concentricity, by applying rules and relationships between elements of the design, or by using expressed algorithms to define building systems and forms.
Design models generated by parametric design can be extremely visually fascinating and complex and they are often referred to as “computer generated art”.
