There are a million and one tips out there when it comes to writing great content. As someone who is creating content on a daily basis I’ve had to sort through a lot of do’s and don’ts, plus navigate my way through the false claims of “the magic ingredients” when it comes to content creation.
At the end of the day I’ve found that only one thing is true: that there is no “right way” to create content. The important thing is to sort through what works for you as a writer or creator, and make sure you are paying attention to trending material and the necessary components that make up great content.
Listed below are 6 tips I use to create great content. And just to be clear, by great content I mean something that is sharable, relatable, and ultimately a lead-generator that drives traffic to a website; because that’s kind of the whole point of it all, isn’t it?
1. Know your audience
I create social media post calendars and write blog posts almost on the daily. One of the most important pieces of this puzzle is to distinguish the voice of the brand, and who they are speaking to. Writing a blog post for a nation-wide mortgage brokerage as opposed to writing a post for a luxury villa rental group, needless to say, requires a very different tone of voice.
2. Know your keywords
A blog post without keywords is like a peanut butter without the jelly. Doing some keyword research before beginning to write is a very important part of writing great content. A well-constructed blog post that has SEO (search engine optimization) terms essentially allows Google to market you for free. Content with strong SEO can continue to generate leads for months and even years after creation.
3. Know what’s going on
It’s important to have a grasp on trending ideas and current viral content. This is ultimately the best way to understand what is considered “sharable” and “clickable”. You don’t want to blend in with the rest, but you also definitely don’t want to fall behind.
4. Have a calendar of important dates and events
One of the things I do on a quarterly basis is create a calendar of important dates and events that I can use to make sure I’m posting relevant content. Holidays and festive dates are a great marketing tool. Plus, this avoids the nightmare of trying to come up with a topic out of thin air. If you’re a fellow content creator, then you’ll know exactly what I mean.
5. Get ‘em in the sweet spot
According to a recent study by the Wharton Business School, it was discovered a very strong relationship between virality and emotion. The study found that most-shared content was content that evoked some kind of emotion in the reader. Be it joy, fear, shock, or sadness – apparently it really works.
6. Your title is everything
Never underestimate the power of a great title. Your job as a content creator is to convince people to click on your article or post that will lead them away from the social media platform to an e-commerce website or booking engine. While your content needs to be strong, your title is everything when it comes to getting people to click on it in the first place.
Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid to think outside the box
As a creator, we need to be willing and able to come up with unique content that people haven’t seen before. While it’s important to keep up with trends and try to stay relevant, sometimes taking creative risks can have great payoffs. So go ahead, have fun with it!

Sarah lives in her little bubble of compassion and love for the planet. She studied Literature and Communications at Camosun College in Victoria B.C., and is presently working towards obtaining her Herbology and Natural Medicine certification in order to start her own practice. When she isn’t spending her time geeking out in the digital world, tending to her plants, or reading books on natural medicine, you can find her running barefoot with her pups, looking up delicious new vegetarian recipes to try, or trying (and failing) to reach whatever is on the top shelf.
