Tweetdeck

Twitter is one of the biggest social networks in the world with more than 200 million active users as of December 2012. The service was launched in 2006 with the objective of creating a social network that is efficient for business purposes, and many complementary applications have been now created for Twitter.

Some of these existing apps or API can be used to analyze your Twitter followers: Changes in the number of followers, locations, demographics and tweet compilations. Specifically now, we’ll focus on the Tweetdeck app.

Tweetdeck was created in 2008 by Iain Dodsworth with goal of creating a program that would allow users to manage numerous accounts from different social networks. In the beginning, Tweetdeck supported accounts from MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, GoogleBuzz, Foursquare and LinkedIn.

In May 2011 Twitter acquired Tweetdeck and developed new software that would only support Facebook and Twitter. Tweetdeck has become the most popular API for Twitter with a market share of 19%, placing it only behind Twitter’s official webpage, mainly because Tweetdeck offers a lot of very useful options for community managers not available on the webpage.

Tweetdeck API is divided in columns customized by the user, according to their preference, like their Twitter timeline, live terms search, live hashtags search, user mentions and others user’s tweets.

One of the most practical functions of this API is the ability to pre-program to have an online presence without the necessity of be physically using the social network at a specific time, although of course it is recommended to periodically check that your tweets are being posted as programmed.
