The Internet’s 7 Deadly Sins

By Víctor Ramos

January 04, 2013

The website bbc.co.uk published an interview with UK cyber-security consultant Alan Woodward in which he alerted users to the 7 deadly sins on the internet that can lead you right into the path of hackers.

Apathy Believing that others are responsible for our safety online.

Curiosity Clicking on hyperlinks out of curiosity often opens you up to hackers.

Gullibility Assuming that the “certification” of a website is real without checking the logo or symbol for authenticity.

Courtesy We all want to be nice, but that courtesy lent to the unknown person on the other side of the monitor can open you up to being taken advantage of or misled.

Greed Since its inception, the internet has been a source of “sharing”; leading many of us to feel that everything should be had for free online. But beware; those free sites often come with a nasty payback, particularly to your privacy.

Diffidence People often are shy to ask about certifications with internet contacts which can lead to deception.

Thoughtlessness It is extremely easy to make something malicious look like a genuine or official e-mail, so the easiest way to protect yourself is to think before acting.
