Kim Dotcom, founder of Megaupload, stated recently that he was finishing a new version of this page after the FBI closed it for breaking many copyright laws and Dotcom being accused of other charges as serious as money laundering.
Dotcom tweeted: “Quick update on the new Mega: Code 90% done. Servers on the way. Lawyers, partners and investors are ready. Be patient it’s coming”
The main focus of the page will remain the same: to provide virtual storage space to users and access files for download. In order to avoid being charged again, Dotcom found the solution in encryption.
The difference between the previous version of Megaupload and Mega will be that when someone uploads a file it will be automatically encrypted and the only way to see it will be by having the password.
The user who uploads the file will be the only one to have the password. This way Mega will be free of any responsibility for hosting copyrighted files, the file sharing will depend exclusively on the users.
Therefore, even if the authorities decide to confiscate the data centers it will be impossible for them, as it is for Mega, to verify the files without the password.
Dotcom is convinced that this method is shielded to the legislative interpretation that outlawed Megaupload, since the only way Mega could be declared illegal would be if encryption were considered illegal as well.
