The Interest in Pinterest

By Jorge Chávez

March 09, 2012

The fastest site to ever reach 10 million unique visitors, Pinterest has created a unique social networking forum that is based on collections of images posted by users.

Pinterest was launched in March 2010 in Palo Alto, California, by founder Ben Sibermann and is managed by Cold Brew Labs. Listed as one of the “50 Best Websites of 2011” in Time Magazine, Pinterest is a fun and addictive site which allows users to create a virtual bulletin board and use the “Pin It” button to upload images, videos, or other media to create a theme-based collection.

Why Pinterest? The site allows for a unique way of social networking sharing that allows users to express things that interest or inspire them. The site has been particularly popular with female users and popular site topics include weddings, home décor, fashion, recipes, pets and travel. Users can view the Pinterest collections of others and leave comments or feedback, creating a community of shared interests between users.

To access Pinterest, new users must be invited by a current Pinterest member or they must request an invitation directly from the Pinterest site. Registration for Pinterest must be linked to a Twitter or Facebook account and, if registering with Facebook, your account must use the new Facebook timeline. The Apple App store also offers a Pinterest App which allows users to “pin” items directly from their iPhone.

Pinterest is now valued at approximately 200 million dollars and has 11.7 million unique users, showing that the interest in Pinterest continues to increase.
