Footballer Chicharito proves more popular than politics

June 22, 2011

The representatives of the candidates for governor for the state of Mexico decided to move forward their 2nd and final plotical debate due to the soccer match between Mexico and Honduras. Telecasting the debate at the same as the highly anticipated sporting event would have be akin to scoring an own goal.

While organizers for the debate have made concessions to the format in order to generate interest among the populace and interaction between the candidates, it seems that despite the advance of social media, mobile technology and a more tech savvy population, politicians just cannot get a break online or off.

While this bodes well for football, the implications may be a little disheartening for observers of Mexico. Despite the recent spate of narco related problems along the border, we just want to have fun… Perhaps it should be interpreted as a wake up call to politicians.

If their debates were deemed as relevant to the lives of everyday Mexican and consisted of a little less full self promotion their audience reach just might widen.

Or we could have TiVo-ed the debate…

The game will be played at 9:00 PM on June 22 as scheduled, while the debate will be held at the new time of 8:00 PM.
