Currently, Google, the giant of communication and technology, is focused on its most important project, Google Genomics. This provides a database for storing, processing, exploring and sharing the reading of DNA sequences, using Google cloud infrastructure.
The experts at Google are working on a project called Autism Speaks, having invested over $500 million, which will store the genomes of autistic persons directly to Genomics database.
This will allow researchers to spend less time moving data back and forth and more time analyzing data and collaborating with colleagues.
What are the benefits of Genomics?
• To store information about genomes.• To share data with different research groups, making it public or distributing it among a select community.• To explore the data through one or more specimens.• To be able to study not only a genome at once, but millions.
For only $25 a year (for the basic service charge for Genomics), Google will allow users to upload DNA data to servers to create a database of genomes, which will allow research it understanding and preventing disease to move forward at a much quicker pace.
This service became available in March and is steadily gaining more strength. Other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft, are also looking at entering this sector with competing products.
