Two things are happening in wearable computing that could change the world. These are the kinds of technology that everyone needs to be aware of because they’re on the horizon, will build empires and leave companies who miss it dead in its wake.
Google Glass – Computing
There’s no question that wearable technology will change our interactions with the world and technology more deeply than any before it. Despite its dorky form, one day, my Google Glass will let me look at something as basic as a restaurant menu in a whole new way: Definitions of ingredients I don't understand will pop out; details on what my friends thought of that dish will be offered up as I decide; and I might even get the suggestion that I avoid shellfish during months without an “r.”
Dating at bars will change when I can see information about everyone that I see before I decide to connect with them – or they with me: Who they’re Friends with, Linked In profiles, favorite drink, and whether they’re in or out of relationship The possibilities are vast..
Though there is still the looming question of the geeky form, especially on a date. Anyone out there want to style a winning wearable form?
Oculus Rift – Virtual Reality
After an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign and $14M of venture funding, the Oculus Rift is going to bring us a revolution in virtual reality immersion experiences.
The bizarre looking Oculus Rift can make one think the experience is going to be underwhelming. The first thing you see is a house. With your hands on the keyboard (you literally can't see anything else but the world you are in), you can start walking around. Use the keyboard to turn yourself left and right and see the trees around you and you realize that you’re on a bluff. You can even see dandelion seeds blowing around you so impressive is the quality of the virtual reality.
Then you realize that your head is good enough; you don’t need the key board. Turn your head right and the field turns right. Then down. Up. Behind you. Here’s what one participant said afterward: “The immersive experience was so good, so responsive, so ‘real’, that when I took the headset off, I exclaimed: “I felt like I was in another world.” Because I was. My friends, the matrix will have arrived in just a few years.”
Preorder an Oculus Rift or any other wearable computing device today or find a way to try one out. Do you think this is the start of something huge?
